The history of the Griffin family has been traced back to 1829, when a slave named James was born. He married Harriette Catherine and saw a picture of the mythical griffin. He thought the creature with the head and wings of an eagle and the body of a lion was magnificent. After the Civil War he abandoned his slave name, took Griffin as his freed last name, and so our family began.
